What are the differences between Chinese zodiac and Western zodiac?
Chinese zodiac, also known as Shengxiao, consists of twelve animals representing different years in a cycle of 12 years. These animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each animal sign is determined by the year of an individual's birth, and it is believed that each animal has its own unique characteristics that affect the personality and destiny of those born under it.
On the other hand, Western zodiac, also called astrology, divides the year into twelve signs, with each sign assigned to a certain period of time. The twelve signs in Western zodiac are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Similar to Chinese zodiac, each sign is believed to possess certain traits that can influence a person's personality and fortunes.
Furthermore, while Chinese zodiac focuses more on the lunar calendar and the year of birth, Western zodiac is based on the sun's position at the time of birth. The symbols and myths associated with these zodiacs also differ, with Chinese zodiac animals being based on the story of the Jade Emperor and the race to cross a river, while Western zodiac symbols are based on the constellations and their mythology.
In terms of compatibility, Chinese zodiac matches people based on the compatibility of their animal signs, while Western zodiac matches people based on the relationship between their signs. Both zodiacs also have their own unique ways of predicting one's fortune and personality, with Chinese zodiac using five elements and the yin-yang theory, and Western zodiac employing the use of planets and houses.
Overall, while both Chinese zodiac and Western zodiac share similarities in terms of predicting one's personality and destiny, their underlying philosophies, symbols, and methods of fortune-telling are different. Understanding the differences between these two zodiacs can lead to a greater appreciation for the rich cultural history and beliefs that have shaped them.
