表面上

January and May是“一月和五月”的意思

但事實上

它正確的意思是指

“老夫少妻”

更接地氣的說法就是常說的“老牛吃嫩草”

a marriage or relationship between an older person and one considerably younger.

常與marriage和romance連用。

該典故源自英國作家喬叟所著的《坎特伯雷故事集》中“商人的故事”。

January 和May是該故事中的兩個人的名字，前者是一位男爵，他在60歲時娶了一個如花似玉的名叫May的年輕姑娘，所以后人就用a case of January and May指“老夫娶少妻”。

來源于這同一個故事的還有一個短語：to have January chicks，這里的chicks當然不是指小雞，而是指孩子。

January和May結婚后不久，May就有了孩子，所以to have January chicks意思為“老來得子”，你get到了嗎？

月份的來歷

在英語中，有四個數字月(9月至12月)，八個名稱月。而這八個名稱月又分別以三種方法命名：

第一種：采用古羅馬、古希臘神話中神仙的名字為月名的有一、三、四、五、六月，這五個月：一月 (January)，雙面門神伊阿諾斯(Janus)；March(三月)，戰神瑪斯(Mars)；April(四月)，愛與美的女神阿佛洛狄忒(Aphrodite)；May(五月)，護衛萬物生長的女神 邁亞(Maius)；June(六月)，朱庇特的妻子朱諾(Juno)。

第二種：以愷撒和奧古斯都名字命名的July(七月)和 August(八月)。

第三種：用規范人們行為的拉丁詞為月名——February(二月)，月份名稱源自拉丁文februare(凈化、贖罪)。在歷史上，二月的下半月是古羅馬蕓蕓眾生祈禱、凈化、贖罪，并用祭品表示自己悔罪。
